Statues strike a soothing chord with new single "Cures" [Review]

The Swedish indie rock act Statues has shared a new track, "Cures," the lead single from their forthcoming album, "Dopamine." A beautiful, calming, but energizing track combining pop tunes with Christiann Kjellvinder's unique voice. Set to a genuine, endearing sound a la The Replacements or The Lemonheads, the track is livened by its candour and bright guitar work. Statues bring something uniquely their own into the time-honored indie-rock tradition.

The vocal from Kjellvander is the emotional heart of the song. They feel authentic and relatable. A little gravely, the vocals are beautifully personal and manage to keep the listener incredibly engaged. In addition to the polished yet sincere instrumentals of the band that surrounds them, "Cures" carries a perfect balance between vulnerability and power. Serving as the lead single, "Cures" not only teases what's to come for "Dopamine", but it additionally hints at a fresh direction for the band.

It's a declaration saying full well that they are taking one step into something different with their music. Statues have more to offer than mere alt-rock homage. "Cures" is vibrant and exciting, and throughout "Dopamine," we encounter a way of thinking that is perhaps most clearly expressed on any album, readily enjoyable for fans and transcendent, as evidence that you are being looked after and that your existence is accounted for.
