Australian producer and composer Dan Webb has shared “Things Rise And Fall,” the second song from his upcoming fifth album, Lion Dance. The track emerges as an uptempo, striking wall of sound, featuring an extended collection of musicians and inspired by Taoist philosophy and Webb’s experience moving from Melbourne to Singapore.
The magnitude of the track is immediately apparent in its lineup. Completing the rhythm section are bass from the budding Los Angeles jazz phenom Logan Kane and drums from Clive Deamer. Stevie Blacke and Nate Werth also contribute to the aural pallet with strings and percussion respectively, deepening the musical terrain.
“Things Rise And Fall” doesn’t seem like a simple genre exercise, it seems to be based on movement, contrast and atmosphere. The striking nature of the track gives it a sense of motion, the uptempo basis keeps the music moving. There is a Taoist link to the sculpture that adds another layer. The track comes from a meeting point between philosophical thought and lived experience, the track and the personal experience of migrating from Melbourne to Singapore. This adds a bigger thematic identity to “Things Rise And Fall” in the upcoming Lion Dance album.
The collaborative character of the recording also aids its effect. With Webb’s production and composition, jazz, percussion, drums, and strings meld, allowing the music to find a space that is both detailed and spacious.
