Little Brown Jug Brass and Ashley Ghostkeeper's “My North Star Home” illuminate the heart of home

Little Brown Jug Brass has released its striking new single, "My North Star Home". With the ghostly, arresting voice and songwriting of acclaimed Métis artist Ashley Ghostkeeper, the track is a poignant meditation on loss, lineage, and the invisible threads that bind us to those who came before us.

The song is born from a sweet memory of her grandmother and late grandfather, whom she refers to as the family’s “North Star,” an ever-present guiding light that keeps watch over them. In writing the collection from her mother’s imagined perspective, she gently gives voice to the mourning of losing a parent too early and what it takes to keep their light burning quietly. Little Brown Jug Brass encases her tale with the warm brass tones and gentle instrumentation that are a reflection of a winter’s night sitting by the fireplace, soft, thoughtful, and very human.

The music video is a moving visual representation of Ghostkeeper’s story, characterized by sincerity. Her actual cousin plays her mother, driving with a photo of Ashley’s grandfather on the dashboard. Ghostkeeper herself comes across like a ghost of memory, subtle, a guide, always there. It’s not only a tribute to one family, but also an expression of the collective experience of clinging to those who are gone.

"North Star Home" is a fantastic standalone collaboration and a delightful taster of Little Brown Jug Brass’s forthcoming holiday album, "Holiday Spirits", set for release on November 28th, 2025. While Ghostkeeper’s feature is the only one to appear on this single, her themes, belonging, legacy, and what home means resonate throughout the album.
