Boston artist M-Dot and producer Confidence have named their latest record "Rollercoaster," a name that suits the ride with its own pendulum of life and ever-so-effective lift-off. Developed from a classic Hip-Hop perspective, it's the last teaser before their hugely anticipated joint album "Library of Sound" drops on 27 June.
M-Dot wraps Confidence's soulful, boom-bap-heavy beat with some raw raps about how life can turn on a dime, especially when you're moving through the industry with integrity. His flow is cutting but full of the weight of experience, moving easily from triumph to turmoil. It's the lyrical equivalent of hitting the restraints hard during a moments-long drop, only to be lifted by a last bit of resilience and sense of purpose.
Production by Confidence is the perfect canvas. The vinyl crackle's warmth, the drums' punch, and the samples' depth leave room for M-Dot's storytelling. The beat evokes a fellow traveler on a long, complex journey, moving with the message's mood. "Rollercoaster" is the spark that cracked an entire album. "This is the beat that finally led to crafting a full album with Con at the beat-making helm," M-Dot explains. "I wrote to it and realized we finally needed to do this long talked about album." That realization adds weight to this track as a song and a turning point in their creative relationship.
After previous singles, "Primavera" and "No Bail Out," "Rollercoaster" closes out the pre-release portion with honesty and triumph. It's a testament to the pair's continued dedication to genuine, head-bouncing Hip-Hop that speaks a little truth. And with "Library of Sound" releasing digitally and on vinyl soon via Below System Records & Own Lane Music, "Rollercoaster" asserts that M-Dot x Confidence isn't just preserving the culture but is helping it flourish, one introspective song at a time.
