Secretary of Fate brightens light at the end of the tunnel with their latest single, "Look to the Future Now. Inspired by one line in Slade's perennial holiday anthem, "Merry Xmas Everybody," this track wears hope on its sleeve. "Look to the Future Now" is a no-nonsense, feel-good hit of pop/rock energy that doesn't outstay its welcome. And that is what makes it work. It's the type of song you can picture blaring out the rolled-down windows of cars on the first sunny day after a deep winter or wafting over a music festival stage with arms collectively swishing back and forth.
Central to the track is the explosive voice of Damien Edwards, singer of the British classic rock band Cats in Space. His performance is spirited and heartwarming, a perfect match for a song steeped in bright-eyed anticipation. In the hands of Edwards, who brings a too-rare mix of the everyday, the wounded, and the hopeful to the lines, every utterance goes down with the rare type of sincerity and polish that makes even the smallest observation hit like something painfully true, that you just needed to hear.
From a production standpoint, the track wears the golden age of classic pop-rock like a badge of pride yet still manages to update the rootsy formula with a fresh layer of jet-black polish. The result is something familiar but undeniably new. It has all the ingredients of a catchy hook, an anthemic chorus, and a process that makes you want to play it again. "Look to the Future Now" is a message that feels particularly necessary. It is not heavy-handed or preachy, just a gentle reminder, set to melody, that the future belongs to us. In this release, Secretary of Fate pays homage to those accomplishments and builds a bridge from the past toward a brighter future. Mission accomplished, indeed.
