Chloe Foy transforms tension into groove in "Elephant In The Room" [Review]

Chloe Foy's melodies and poetic wordplay are displayed in "Elephant In The Room." The single sparkles with unexpected charm while diving feet-first into the often-awkward wilderness between silence and emotional honesty. Dropping ahead of her forthcoming sophomore album, "Complete Fool," due by June 6 via Kartel Music Group, the single reads like a cordial challenge and a playful exhale.

Unlike some of her earlier music, which skews contemplative and still, "Elephant In The Room" is vivacious, albeit with a dire message at its center. The song also comes through spontaneity, or so it is in the case of Foy, as she says it was a last-minute addition to the record. Some credit must belong to producer and arranger Harry Fausing Smith, whose intuitive chord progression would form the basis of Chloe's free-associating outpouring of the subconscious. The result is a song that can sound meticulously composed and deliciously unwound.

There's something slyly surreal about how Foy delivers her lines, cryptic images like the sculptor on the moon dance through the verses, giving a slightly whimsical air to a song grounded in emotional distance. This blend of the levitating groove and the gravitational unspoken tension makes "Elephant In The Room" so intoxicating. It describes the silence in a relationship. It sits with it, gives it its rhythm, and almost urges it to dance.

The pace lopes along, but the groove is irresistible. An atypical summer anthem, but Foy owns it with self-assured ease. And as she says, the repetitive refrain turns into her own sort of slow summer bop, and she's not exactly wrong. It lingers, pulses gently, and like the best conversations you didn't almost have, it haunts you. Ahead of "Complete Fool," "Elephant In The Room" gives a new glimpse into an artist who's not afraid to change. Chloe Foy is still a mistress of emotional nuance but smiles while singing it this time.
