Sergiy Bolotny’s unveils “Little Dutch Rhapsody No.1”

There’s something truly special about taking an old folk story and giving it a fresh musical twist. In “Little Dutch Rhapsody No.1,” Ukrainian violinist Sergiy Bolotny does just that. He blends Dutch folklore, classical technique, and a lively sense of movement.

Now living in the Netherlands and performing with the Noord Nederlands Orkest, Bolotny created this piece as part of a project exploring traditional Dutch stories through classical music. At the heart of the composition is a humorous folk song called “Ain boer wol noar zien noaber tou,” which tells the tale of a farmer heading out with just one shoe or clog.

Instead of sticking to the simple charm of the original story, “Little Dutch Rhapsody No.1” turns it into an exciting concert piece. Lively dance rhythms drive the music forward, while the violin's swift movements showcase the technical skill it demands. Alongside this energy, softer, melodic sections provide a welcome contrast, letting the music breathe and revealing another side of the story.

What makes this recording especially enjoyable is its natural sound. Rather than sounding overly polished, it showcases the violin's genuine voice. This approach creates a close, personal feel, even as the music displays impressive skill. The humor and resilience of the original folk tale shine through, but they’re presented in a way that fits the ambitious style of classical music.
