Sam Sly’s “Intwined” comes with a clear mission, to refocus an organic rock sound. The track was born out of improvisations with guitarist Ash Largent over lunch breaks at JMC Academy, a collaborative genesis that seems perfectly appropriate to its natural, musician-led vibe.
What started in those informal sessions became something more grandiose with producer David Skeet, who understood Sly’s concept for mixing cello textures with guitar solos. Those elements combined to create a darker, yet melodic atmosphere that lends “Intwined” its distinct personality.
The interplay of the many parts of the production is extremely interesting. The track is driven by rock guitar, with cello textures adding another dimension of emotional depth. The result is a sound that balances gloom and accessibility rather than letting either side dominate.
Sly's vocal delivery adds another vital dimension. The power of the voice is not in its mere projection, but in its restraint, through which the emotion comes forth. That’s a natural fit for the music's layered production, letting the song's emotion come through without overdoing it.
