Mr J turns romantic disillusionment into an upbeat reality check on “Love is a Fantasy”

There’s something so refreshingly honest about a song that doesn’t adorn love with immaculate promises. Mr J’s debut original single “Love is a Fantasy” is a spirited take on the disillusionment of love, drawing on personal insight into relationships and turning it into a track with a far broader emotional reach.

"Love is a Fantasy" started as a humble class project. It could have been a simple academic exercise, but watching my friends struggle to leave relationships that no longer fulfilled them made it a serious piece of music. That starting premise gives the single an authentic sense of purpose, as Mr J explores the unpleasant truth that love, despite its importance, is not always the answer.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about the tune is the contrast between the subject matter and the musical direction. Instead of pushing into the sadness that is sometimes associated with songs about problematic romance, Mr J chose an optimistic approach, giving the subject a brighter, more approachable vibe while still allowing its fundamental message to land.

The tale behind the making is just as personal. The tune was recorded and mixed at Brixton Hill Studios, a testament to Mr J’s hands-on approach.
