Music can be a place where hard feelings go. ERIC ALEXANDRAKIS takes on “One More Angel [A Tribute To Raul Malo]” from that same place, selecting a song from Raul Malo’s solo album LUCKY ONE and looking for his way in a time of loss.
The recording started in January as a way to deal with that emotion. But the track was not easy to make. The music went through a lot of experimentation and uncertainty, with questions about pace, feel, and time signature constantly shifting the course.
Too slow. Way too weird. Too quickly. Three-quarter time. Six-eight. Even 11-8 became part of the artistic inquiry. That intricacy lends a uniquely human quality to the publication. The process behind a recording is not always smooth, especially when the song is tied to something emotionally painful. Sometimes an artist can know exactly why they need to do something while yet trying to understand how it should sound.
The problem becomes much more striking because the song itself is structured around only three chords. But the recording process was not made easier by that seeming simplicity. Instead, it was just another piece of the puzzle Alexandraxis was trying to unravel. The track is also a dedication to Raul Malo, who has a clear regard for the song’s source material, while also reflecting ERIC ALEXANDRAKIS’s own creative process.
