Eric Angelo Bessel’s “Pathways” debuts as the first single and video premiere from Illusion of an Inland Ocean, opening a door into an immense musical realm molded by mood, memory, landscape, and discovery.
The track expands upon the greater notion behind an album composed of eighteen interrelated compositions. Rather than following a conventional narrative, Bessel’s work enables listeners to travel through an imagined environment where familiar roads, neglected infrastructure, worn shorelines, shifting light, and the endurance of nature become recurring landmarks.
That idea lends “Pathways” an interesting sense of motion. It's less about offering a direct destination than about setting the conditions for discovery. The music dwells in a world where the familiar can slowly turn into the enigmatic and where ordinary surroundings hint at something deeper just below the surface.
Written, recorded, mixed, and produced solely by Bessel himself, the release has a very personal base. “Pathways” is an introduction to a body of work that expands the world introduced in Visitation (2023) and Mirror at Nite (2025) and looks toward what is described as his most expansive and quietly mysterious work to date.
