Jackie Conn’s “Baking Day” serves up a heartwarming debut

Some songs don't just play, they slowly unfold like a memory you didn't know you had. "Baking Day," Jackie Conn's first single, is just that kind of song, warm, thoughtful, and full of the quiet beauty of everyday moments that shape a lifetime.

"Baking Day," the title track from Conn's upcoming debut album, was co-written with well-known songwriter Boo Hewerdine and features the delicate touch of award-winning fingerstyle guitarist Chris Cleverley. The single came out on March 11, just in time for Mother's Day. It's a loving musical tribute to family, tradition, and the simple things that stay with us long after childhood.

"Baking Day" is based on Conn's fond memories of spending Sundays with her mother. Music was also a part of the home, which was filled with the smells of roast dinners and freshly baked goods. Conn remembers her mother singing along to Nat King Cole and other artists while she moved between mixing bowls and ovens. These songs are now part of her memories. The song builds on that sense of memories, thanks to Conn's deeply personal storytelling and Cleverley's expressive guitar playing. The result is a piece that feels personal without being closed off. Its emotional core speaks to anyone who has ever found meaning in the traditions of home.

Conn has been on a journey to this first album for a long time. Her path shows a quiet determination to follow the pull of music wherever it took her, from singing in the backyard of her childhood terraced house to finding her songwriting voice later in life through workshops and retreats. Hewerdine realized how deep her family-inspired writing was during one of these retreats. This helped her write the song that would become "Baking Day"
