British-Ugandan singer-songwriter Daudi Matsiko returns with a gorgeous new single, “How Can I Love?”, sung beautifully by Ríoghnach Connolly of Honeyfeet and The Breath. The track is taken from Matsiko’s debut EP, "Dead Bird Dream". On this new track, he further adds to his combination of earnest folk music, a style that has seen him collaborate with GoGo Penguin and Werkha, as well as enjoy success with his debut album, "The King of Misery".
From the first tender notes on the guitar, reminiscent of a contemplative Nick Drake, Matsiko’s melodies weave around Connolly’s vocals, which are as fragile as they are pure. The configuration of the song harks back to classic folk, but with a modern twist, featuring soft beats and contemporary sounds that give it an airy lift, thereby emphasizing the emotional punch of the lyrics.
The lyrics of “How Can I Love?” are deeply personal and honest. Matsiko’s songwriting is an invitation to get close, and in this space, revealing openness is considered a strength. Connolly’s harmonies work to do more than buoy, they also add layers to the theme of longing at the song’s center, ensuring it lingers even after its end.
Following in the mood and artistry he brought to his last single, “Tiger’s Dream,” recorded with Tiger Cohen-Towell of Divorce, the song showcases Matsiko as a modern folk craftsman whose pursuit is emotional veracity. His music has a quiet strength, a blend of openness and soothing that feels unassuming and speaks to the heart.
