The Modbeats spark nocturnal escapism with “Midnight Train”

The Modbeats are back, and they're not just knocking on the door, they're tearing it down. "Midnight Train," their new single, is a compelling resistance anthem, an escape plan, and a statement of rock attitude. It's the band's first new tune since their debut, Ballad of a Starving Artist – and it's been a fan favorite at gigs.

The song captures the band's energy on stage while also sounding both fresh and enormous. "Midnight Train" grabs you from the first subtle chord and carries you away into the night. The rhythm keeps carrying you with a forceful push that knows no boundaries. The mix is composed of Philip Dunn's anguish-filled vocals, as he digs deep into his vocal cords to scream the chorus, and twin guitars from Dunn and Joe Mandia, narrating a story that begins with '50s rockabilly and ends with '60s jangle-pop. Fizz's drums explode, and Scott Matison's basslines grip the floor as they're assaulted once more and once more. Throughout, the 'bait sings of the brain and the highway, and the rhythm snaps like firewood, it sneers like a monster in a horror movie, and speaks sweet down-home sense.

The Modbeats are more complex and far-reaching than other bands of their type. In some cases, that kind of struggle is violent, producing a carefully constructed, odd, and sound. The record is practically filmic, evoking a red sports vehicle speeding down a moss-covered road. "Midnight Train" is The Modbeats' music at its most audacious and powerful.
