The Haligonian siblings that make up Overnight, Lynette and Carla Gillis, have released a poignant new single titled "Strong & Good", which serves as the first offering off of their upcoming long player, "Put Me In Your Light"
Penned in the shadow of their father's sudden death and amid the disorienting return home from Toronto during the pandemic, "Strong & Good" is a masterclass in transforming personal pain into art. What makes the track so powerful, however, is its subtle tug-of-war. It's mournful yet forward-looking, intimate yet spacious. The Gillis sisters' harmonies are always the best part of Overnight's sound, feel bracingly unadorned here, a soothing warmth that envelops both thoughtful remembrances and calls for resilience.
Produced by Superfriendz/Surprise Pink veteran Charles Austin, there's plenty of dynamic range in the spacious-but-busy soundscape. Michael Small (Meligrove Band, Loviet) and Jason Starnes (Bells Clanging) both add understated tones that help piece the track together without taking anything away from its emotional center. The result is a song that feels lived-in, real, and achingly human.
"Strong & Good" not only offers a window into Overnight's personal transformation but suggests the sound and feel of Put Me In Your Light, 10 cuts of big riffs, delicate harmonies, and pervasive optimism. Though grief and memory anchor the narrative of this album, the overall mood tilts toward buoyancy, hope, and a softly triumphant tone, a testament to the Gillis sisters' capacity to turn adversity into art.
