Madeleine Rose Witney captures charisma with swagger on "Struttin'" [Review]

One of Kentish Town's very own, Madeleine Rose Witney steps up confidently to the spotlight with "Struttin'," a jazzy retro-soul single that oozes charm and wit. Released as the follow-up to her debut EP "From Now On," the song depicts Witney as part torch singer, part narrator, not afraid to pair humor with sophistication.

Witney's delivery can shift from dominating to fun, and it effortlessly skates over brass stabs and old-school rhythms. There's a swagger here that feels lived-in, an assurance that enables her to celebrate and satirize the world she sings about. It's a juggling act that only a true performer could pull off as a half entertainer, half observer. It's evidence that Witney knows how to pay homage to tradition while also daring to take it forward with her brand of neoteric panache.

Written as a bit of a cheeky homage to her old flatmate Strutter, an aging mod with a Jack Daniels and burnt sausages lifestyle, "Struttin" is just as much a loving roast as it is groove-laden jam. Beneath its funk-fueled vitality lies a sly commentary on manhood, masculinity, and the colorful figures that populate London's fading underground.

Due to be released on 13th November, officially through 5dB Records, "From Now On" will showcase Witney's multi-dimensional artistry. If "Struttin" is any indication, we're in for a confident debut, playful but honest and undeniably stylish. In "Struttin'," Madeleine Rose Witney shines, strutting her way into a track as playful as it is infectious.
