JOURNEYGLO beams with wonder on new single "Bright In My Eyes" [Review]

Dallas-based indie singer-songwriter JOURNEYGLO continues to create music that is both intimate and distant, and her newest single, "Bright In My Eyes," perfectly embodies this quality. Taken from her debut full-length album, "Limp By Your Side," the song captures that iridescent feeling of discovery and torn beauty in misunderstanding. "Bright In My Eyes" is a piano-based ballad that begins soft and builds slowly with cinematic depth.

Soft reverb trails her singing, as if the sound is echoing on some night sky, and the measured, downtempo folk arrangement allows openness to have air. JOURNEYGLO's voice, full of longing and awe, describes looking up, chasing the moon, only to find it isn't where you thought it was. The imagery is based on her own experience when she learned that the moon, in contrast to what she had believed, goes in the same direction as the sun. Rather than necessarily turning disappointment into art, JOURNEYGLO turns it into at least the subject of it, positioning her own moment as a reflection of childlike awe applied to its perceived object and the complexity that would be a pitiful distortion if not, in some ways, who we are.

A Korean pastor's kid, JOURNEYGLO began her musical journey within Christian music but has since expanded her scope to a more universal indie pop spectrum, writing from the space between, where she interpolates themes of faith, evolution, and self-discovery. "Bright In My Eyes" mirrors that journey and invites you into the liminal space between what we think and what we know. Quiet but bold, JOURNEYGLO's new song is a star-gazing, meditation-an opportunity to bask in some of life's little surprises and bathe in the magic of being beautifully wrong.
