Saif delivers a masterpiece with new single "M.A.N" [Review]

"M.A.N" tells the story of an existence lurking within. During a time of flytrap tracks and saturated hip-hop beats, Saif offers the world something apart. "M.A.N" is a genre-smashing manifesto. Born and raised in Sydney to immigrant parents from South Asia, Saif emerged as a first-generation Kiwi-Australian hip-hop artist, crafting music rooted in identity, culture, and faith.

His Islamic heritage, his sense of growing up in a place but not being of it, and his double-consciousness of moving between worlds all coalesce on this audacious track, which matches jazz instrumentation with the visceral thump of drill. Two genres, jazz and drill, that reside at opposite ends of the spectrum, but Saif makes them twirl here. "M.A.N" is a fusion of live-feeling instrumentation, velvety horns, and improvisational rhythms over forceful 808s and punchy, percussive beats that don't hold back. It is this seeming collision that generates tension, then relief.

The result is a sound that sounds at once rooted in tradition and wildly experimental. There's a sharp consciousness behind the lyrics, a sign that Saif's artistry doesn't begin and end with aesthetics. And he's rapping from the standpoint of lived history. "M.A.N" serves as a vehicle through which he explores his identity and his place in a world that is frequently inclined to dictate how he should be.

"We wanted to push the boundaries of traditional music and challenge the norms," says Saif. And challenge them he does. There is a realness here and rareness, probably to do with a lack of gimmick and a surfeit of guts. The track grabs your attention, but it feels different. This track is experimental yet accessible. It's rooted, but boundaryless. Saif's pushing the genre forward and forging his own path. "M.A.N" is a moment. The first that all but punches Saif's ticket as a name to keep an eye on and an ear open for.
