Black Steam sparks a firestorm with new single "Rise Up" [Review]

Swedish electro-metal four-piece Black Steam are back with a new track, "Rise Up," a storm-charged anthem that doesn't just rock, it explodes. Wielding their history in glam metal and complex rock like a well-oiled battle axe, this track is a fiery declaration that real metal merely gets louder. The guitar playing from Kennet Jansson is fast and furious, yet still retains the melodic qualities that will draw fans in immediately, reminiscent of the great twin guitar duos of Judas Priest and Accept. It's fueled by drummer Uffe Tillman's steady, pounding pace as well as Hans Liljebladh's gravelly basslines, which come roaring out of the speakers.

Stefan Borg's soaring vocals that land the last blow, a sound that recalls the fire of 80s stadium metal, but with just the right amount of edge to slice through the modern rock landscape. Only founded in 2017, Black Steam has already scorched its name onto the steel wall of European metal, and this track could serve as the band's most defiant roar so far. "Rise Up" is the rebellious, unifying, shoulder-shaking refusal to go gently into the night. The DNA of Iron Maiden and glam-era bombast is present, but this ain't no cover band. Black Steam updates the formula, cleaner production, more pressing themes, and an emotional weight that adds something new to the battle-scarred world of hard rock.

If "Rise Up" is anything to go by, Black Steam is here to protect and develop the legacy of metal. With ferocious musicianship and a natural ability to command the stage, the band draws the listener in, whether they are a new fan discovering the music for the first time or a loyal follower of the band since its early days. So you could crank it loud, burn it and suffer, and "Rise Up." Black Steam is here, and heavy metal breathes through them, for fans of Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Accept, Skid Row, and anyone who still believes in the power of the riff.
