Hailing from the haunting shores of Messina, Italy, Neon Trace molds a sound that evades categorization yet remains chillingly consistent in emotional texture. On their new single, "Blue Love Letters," the pair stick true to their mantra of eclecticism, presenting notes of Alternative Rock, Synthpop, and Gothic/Dark Wave in an expansive, atmospheric blend. Formed in 2022 by Ivan Mondello (voice, guitar, synth) and Adriano Cannatà (bass), Neon Trace was never meant to be pigeonholed in any one genre. And that ethos is evident in "Blue Love Letters."
The track envelops you in a warm, dreamy embrace, a panoramic soundscape featuring brooding bass lines, gauzy synths, and an achingly melancholic yearning that feels simultaneously familiar and completely new. Ivan's voice is pushed ahead like a ghost through the fog, soft, insistent, emotionally weathered, but not defeated. It rests at the fork of exposure and strength akin to the feelings behind hearts scribbling down confessions they'll never actually send. The organization of the melody here relies on the dark romanticism of the '80s new wave, although it has a modern gleam that makes it sound pertinent and new. Meanwhile, Adriano's bass playing anchors the song effortlessly, his relaxed pulse luring you deeper into the story. Together, they write a journal entry up close, enveloping, unambiguously honest.
The production doesn't sell itself short through push or flash. It reserves a contemplative space that allows the emotion in each note to grow. "Blue Love Letters" sounds like a scene. It might be what you'd hear over the closing credits of a heartbreak film or as the sad, muted accompaniment to a broken connection. It's a record of guarded distance, like late-night driving and the half-finished letters we never send. With this release, it's clear Neon Trace is a blender of genres and is an emotional storyteller. And if "Blue Love Letters" is anything to go by, they're just beginning to scratch the surface of their creative palette.
