Returning with a new single, Melbourne-based artist Jimmy Stanfield treats you to infectiously folky and deeply contemplative music. "Maybe I'm Doing Something Right by Me" is Stanfield's third release, and its full-bodied, rich sound is only deepened by the impressive collaborations within. Stanfield's new track is fully self-produced. Every note oozes his talent, and his reticent touch seeps through the speakers. His layered vocal harmonies and intricate acoustic guitar are at its core, but Stanfield showcases his skill in the bass, harmonica, and keys. Energizing the track with a dynamic soundscape full of silky highs and soulful lows, this track is as musically soothing as it is emotionally captivating.
Stanfield's musical talents are not the only ones on display, with his backing band being equally stand-up players in their own right. Joe Auckland, a brass arranger from Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds and The Libertines, contributes some soulful trumpet and flugelhorn to the track. Forging a mellow but heart-stirring horn section, Auckland's arrangements are even mellower, with relaxed energy that plays perfectly against the track's intimacy.
Drummer Noah Bond, known for his work with Cut Worms and Widowspeak, delivers a killer performance in percussion. Playing full kit drums and layering percussion throughout the track, Bond's rhythm snaps and pops as the track's world spins slowly on. Vicki Thorpe's flute also provides a talented foil to the trio of trumpet and hypnotic acoustic. Hitting the track with a semi-comically mawkish, semi-earnest woodwind vibe, "Maybe I'm Doing Something Right by Me" comes to life through its players' voices.
Atop his melodic flourishes and thrills, Stanfield himself mixed the track. It's an earnest performance of intimate honesty. It feels like a confession played on the living room radio. Even through the chaotic shuffle of songs, moments of peace arrive more quickly to those who seek them. "Maybe I'm Doing Something Right by Me" is one such moment.
