Isaac Henry drops a fun and infectious new single to signify a complete creative reset. All previous work is erased, and the new music represents a new beginning in the blazing "Small World." It is a comeback to creative burnout and a thank you letter to the possibilities of starting from scratch.
"Small World" comes with the raw energy of someone who's at last making music for themselves again. No more half-measures and compromise. In its stead is the sound of pop smarts marrying alternative hip-hop swagger, all of it delivered with a cocky grin and a nice, self-deprecating strut. The result is a track that is as mischievous as it is magnetic.
Isaac does not hold back in his delivery. His witty, honest, and gloriously immature lyrics are the type of bars you can flat-out feel. They were written with teenage glee and grown-ass defiance. And that's the charm. There is a bit of catharsis in how the track plays out, someone having rediscovered the joy of making music for the hell of it. The production is taut, clean, and intentionally chaotic. Punchy drums and glitchy textures create a playground in which Isaac comes across as loud, weird, and himself.
More than being a song, "Small World" plays like a mission statement. It's Isaac Henry telling the world he's back, although now it will be on his terms. And while many of his "old people friends" might squirm in the direction, that's the kind of rebellious spark that brings this track to life. If "Small World" indicates the future, we're in for a wild, genre-and-field-hopping ride from an artist who is finally making records without compromise. Isaac Henry is one to disrupt. And damn, it's great to have him back.
