Walter The Producer drops hypnotic new single "Roadtrip" [Review]

The Producer's new single "Roadtrip," released through Slumbo Labs, is a road trip if there ever was one pairing fuzzed-out, delay-soaked layering with a roller coaster ride through time, genre, and mood over a pillow-soft conviction to melodic pleasures. In keeping with his elusive persona, Walter, who's from the south shore of Massachusetts and born Reid, doesn't provide much explanation. "Roadtrip" slows down right where his previous singles did yet leans into a new direction that feels excitingly unfiltered and entirely him. The joint embodies his artistic progression from the beginning, reminiscent of his early records such as on last year's No Substance Mixtape and the 2024's celebrated project "PLEASE HELP ME I'M SCARED," but now ushering in an even bolder period with his forthcoming EP due out this June.

A product of a writing spree fueled by bouts of heavy rock listening and the happiness of finding a new cool delay plugin, "Roadtrip" is not just a smart gamble. It's a slow-burn anthem that pairs retro warmth with a modern sheen. Written in the calm serenity of his LA apartment, the track slowly grew into form when Morando, whose other projects include Liily and Miley Cyrus, added live instruments and full drums, giving the dreamlike synths and spaced-out guitars a raw and human pulse underneath.

Walter's love for timeless acts like Earth Wind & Fire, Eagles, and Jamiroquai is evident not in mimicry but in essence. The goal is groove and grit, shimmer and soul. You can almost feel the road racing by on the other side of the windshield, but the vibe remains inward-turned, introspective, nearly glancing. It's music for headphones and highways. While he remains soft-spoken and down-to-earth, Walter appears happy to let the music take the lead. And yet here he is, staking out a unique lane in the alt-rock universe without saying much. That quiet confidence, perhaps, is what establishes "Roadtrip" as the crown jewel. It lingers like a memory you are not yet ready to leave behind. This is no ordinary release, as "Roadtrip" is a moment. And for Walter The Producer, it shows that the trip is only just beginning.
