Soraia sets fire with fierce anthem "Alright OK" [Review]

Philly's rising power-punks Soraia have made their most considerable sound yet with their new single. Their latest single, "Alright OK," is the first gritty punch of the sound that will form their forthcoming EP and is a defiant anthem for anyone who's been ghosted and come back even stronger. Recorded in Sweden with iconic producer Tomas Skogsberg (The Hellacopters, Entombed), "Alright OK" finds the band at a turning point, worn down by industry noise and the discord of the outside world. But far from withdrawing, they went back to the well. They returned like blood, re-oxygenated in the lungs, with a fresh pulse louder and bolder than ever.

"Alright OK," bursts through the door with snarling guitar riffs and a rhythm section that sounds like it's revving a muscle car in the middle of a punk bar brawl. Over seething guitars, frontwoman ZouZou Mansour spits out each line with a venomous snarl, filled with disgust and release. This sharp, poetic disillusionment is draped in a Ramones-esque hook that hits fast and holds on longer. What sets Soraia apart in a world crammed with rock bands is this Philly-based quartet's uniting of street-tough authenticity and something much more vulnerable and poetic. But Mansour's not frightened to drop the ugly truths. She makes them sound dangerously cool when she does.

Bassist Travis Smith, drummer Brianna Sig, and guitarist Mike Jaffe are co-founders and bandleaders, and together, they provide a patchwork of sound that tips the scale between chaos and control, each note bristling with taut, controlled voltages. Mansour breaks free of ghosting culture with a sneer and a stomp. The song bristles with '90s alt-rock fury but also swings with that dirty-glam punk swagger, making Soraia's overall sound addictively raw. This band loves the in-between connecting the guttural and the graceful, between the breakdown and the breakthrough. With "Alright OK," Soraia has shown that sometimes the best revenge is writing the killer fucking song and screaming it into the night.
