C-Wil serves up high energy new anthem "caviar" [Review]

C-Wil is out to be heard, felt, and respected. On "caviar," a standout from his third self-released studio album, "Somewhere In The Middle of Nowhere," he presents a rich, fervent jam that craves attention. C-Wil, also known as Chris Wilson, grew up in Houston but has moved to places like LA and wasted no time since the move. Despite his disdain for the limelight, he's certainly not playing around when cutting through the noise with his sharp rhymes and punchy flows. "caviar" is the latest proof. And it is lively and wholly, exhilaratingly addictive.

"caviar" cruises on a bouncy, percussive track that sounds like an injection of adrenaline. Be it repping it out in the gym, on a dance floor, or vibing at a house party, this track fits. The production has an element of controlled chaos, a celebration at the edge of something darker. And such duality suits C-Wil to a tee. His flow is relaxed and easygoing but with a steely focus. C-Wil does not just rap the carriers. Cadence shifts, clever rhymes, subliminal wit. These things are all comfortable terrain for him, and "caviar" gives him the security to stretch those muscles. It cheers, to be sure, but there is an undercurrent of grit and ambition pulsing below the bounce. He's one of those people that you can tell that hits hard.

That heavy emotional weight is a nice counterbalance to the music on "Somewhere In The Middle of Nowhere." Where the rest of the album deals with the exact themes that can sprout from emotional trauma, depression, and destructive habits, "caviar" offers you a reprieve, a chuckle during a hard day. It's not a digression from the album, but it is a reminder that light and rhythm can survive even in the darkest places.
