"overrated," the latest single from genre-fluid artist aakira fae, is the fearless, unrestrained summer anthem you'd expect.
Penned in a lightning studio session with longtime collaborator Alex Collins, "overrated" came nearly effortlessly and vanished without a trace. In a classic example of creative serendipity-meets-digital disaster, the track was filed under a random title, gone without a trace in the digital void for a year and a half. But as with any great story, it recently resurfaced, rediscovered by Collins on no less auspicious a night than New Year's Eve, and its long-overdue revival couldn't arrive at a moment more muscular.
"overrated" pulls you in from the first of its beat drops with its punchy production and audacious energy. aakira fae's voice here comes across both intentionally and gloriously messy, in a good way. aakira fae's delivery couldn't be more on point, riding that line between emotional openness and don't-care swagger, capturing the release you scream-sing out your car window. This isn't a break-up ballad, or a soft shade-throwing, it's a glittering, growling musical eye roll.
The lyrics don't mince words, and neither does the production. Collins and fae are an irresistible pairing, with a natural, unprocessed, and dangerously catchy chemistry. It's the sort of track that was made to soundtrack a late-night spiral and a rooftop party simultaneously.
