Suki Summer has returned with her new evocative single, "Marianne." This ebbing track shimmers with nostalgia, desire, and the "emerald splendor of summer love." Known for smoothly fusing raucous rock energy with retro synth textures, Suki serves up an emotional gut punch draped in dreamy melodies and poetic storytelling.
Partially inspired by a whirlwind romance that hit her while traveling through Europe, "Marianne" is a love song. It's also a time capsule of an encounter that, although passionate, was set to extinguish. "I wanted "Marianne" to summarize all the time we had together," Suki says. "It was beautiful and wonderful, but there was always this underlying sadness of knowing it wouldn't last past the summer."
Even the title has a profoundly personal ring. Her lover, comparing Suki to the character "Marianne" in Sally Rooney's Normal People, bestowed on her a name that would characterize their short but passionate bond. "It just felt so perfect and so sad that our mutual love for this book reflected our reality," Suki recalls.
With hazy guitar lines, pulsing synths, and Suki's signature ethereal vocals, "Marianne" feels like the soundtrack to a late-night drive through memories you can't fully shake. Fans and critics alike are already hailing it as one of her most moving releases to date, solidifying the up-and-coming artist as an indie music force.
"Sometimes you meet someone," Suki was speaking of Anne, "and it's like being able to finally hold on to the side of the pool after treading water for so long ."
