Odie Leigh, who has been on tour with Shakey Graves at six festivals, released her first album, Carrier Pigeon, and even headlined a tour through December. But somehow, in between all that movement, she’s also found time to deliver something intimate, warm, and timeless, “All Star Breakfast,” a stripped-down folkie duet with Field Medic that sounds like a morning in good company over coffee and sunlight.
“All-Star Breakfast” was written in her trailer three years ago and had been stashed in Leigh’s back pocket for the right moment. After finishing up with Carrier Pigeon, which she recorded with Derek Ted, that moment finally arrived. Aiming to return to something stripped down and homemade, Leigh and Field Medic (a.k.a. Kevin Sullivan) pulled “All Star Breakfast” out and put a new spin on it, though it retains its timelessness. “We wanted a backyard, old-timey feel to it,” Leigh says. And they nailed it.
“All Star Breakfast” is joyfully unrefined, its appeal found in its breezy candor petals of plaintive plucked guitar, arcs of intertwining harmony, and lyrics that sound like love notes written with grease pencil on diner napkins. Sullivan’s additions to the verses present a new angle while respecting the gentle, poetic spirit of “All Star Breakfast.” It’s the sort of song that makes you fight the urge to hustle, sip your coffee a little more slowly, and relish the bittersweet moment.
