Bestfriend is an indie-pop duo consisting of Vancouver’s Stacy Kim and Toronto’s Kaelan Geoffrey. They’re back with a new single, “WHY DO WE DO THIS?” a glistening, existential spiral cloaked in a synth-heavy, dream-pop body.
“WHY DO WE DO THIS?” opens with no delay, getting right to its heart that over-familiar brew of insecurity, isolation , and the self-flagellating pressure we impose on ourselves. “I’m loving too tight Feeling so lonely Thought I was dying,” they sing in the opening verse, establishing a tone that’s both piercingly self-inward-facing and strangely soothing.
“WHY DO WE DO THIS?” feels like getting lost in your thoughts at 2 AM with moody synth textures, subtly warping vocal modulation, and a hypnotic beat luring you deeper. The question posed in the chorus, over and over, “WHY DO WE DO THIS?” mimics the vicious cycle of overthinking, but somehow, “WHY DO WE DO THIS?” never fully gives in to despair. Instead, its infectious groove turns it into a cathartic release, a reminder that we’re all just trying to figure things out.
After a year-long absence, Bestfriend shows they still haven’t missed a step. “WHY DO WE DO THIS?” is the perfect soundtrack for a late-night introspective moment or vibing your way through the everyday chaos.
