Sergiy Bolotny turns Amsterdam’s musical memory into a violin dream with "Little Dutch Rhapsody No. 3 Capriccio Amsterdam"

Some melodies are deeply connected to the places that inspire them, and "Little Dutch Rhapsody No. 3 Capriccio Amsterdam" by Sergiy Bolotny is a perfect example. This piece takes one of Amsterdam's recognizable tunes and transforms it using the beautiful sounds of the violin.

The piece features Pieter Goemans' beloved song "Aan de Amsterdamse grachten." However, Bolotny does much more than play the original melody. He infuses it with a rich style influenced by the famous Old-Viennese violin tradition, creating something romantic, playful, and challenging to play. The music flows smoothly between lyrical, expressive sections and lively, intricate moments filled with quick notes and harmonies. Throughout the piece, the violin goes beyond playing a tune, it becomes the heart and soul of the composition, showcasing a wide range of sounds and emotions.

What makes "Capriccio Amsterdam" special is how it links musical tradition to the city's spirit. Bolotny brings a distinctly urban, romantic flavor to this work. While his previous piece, "Little Dutch Rhapsody No. 1," highlighted the humor of a folk story from Groningen, "Capriccio Amsterdam" dives into the dreamy vibe and lively rhythm of the Dutch capital.

The result is a piece that feels deeply connected to cultural history while bringing that history to life in a fresh way. Rather than viewing the past as unchangeable, Bolotny sees it as a source to reimagine and experience in new, exciting ways. "Little Dutch Rhapsody No. 3 Capriccio Amsterdam" becomes a musical journey through Amsterdam, combining the violin's skillful artistry with elegant old-world charm and contemporary creativity.
